Sarsfields and St. Patrick’s College Armagh will join forces to host a Christmas road run on Sunday 18 December, proceeds of which will be split evenly between the Highmoss and St. Pat’s Grammar School who are sending a number of their pupils to Romania to help alleviate some of the suffering and distress being felt by the orphanages in the country. Mark McConville a St. Patrick’s pupil and a Sarsfields minor and U21 player is the driving force behind the initiative. Mark recently approached the Sarsfields Under 16 management and squad to assist with fundraising. The management team, along with their players take part in a Sunday road run as part of their training strategy. Mark is delighted that the club is throwing its weight behind the idea. Mark commented "Initially I had asked the Under 16’s to help with the project, but when it was suggested that the entire Club could help it was a fantastic boost". The road run will be around 3.5 miles and will be staged along the Lough shore before heading on to the main Derrytrasna Road back to the finishing line at the Sarsfields Club. The run is open to the entire community and Irish Welterweight boxer Steven Haughian has confirmed that he will be taking part on the day. Steven said "The Sarsfields Under 16’s train with us on Friday nights they have a fantastic attitude and I just couldn’t refuse the offer to take part in what is a very worthwhile event". Local sportsman, strength and conditioning coach Tommy Stevenson who is currently training for a triathlon has also thrown his weight behind the project. The St. Paul’s clubman said "some of these Sarsfields boys are very fit so I hope I don’t finish at the back of the field. It is a great idea and I’m looking forward to taking part". Special sponsored prizes will be handed out on the day to the top finishers including under age, Senior, ‘B’, Ladies, as well as the first veteran home (over 35’s). Sponsorship forms are available from Sarsfields members or from the clubs website (below). All runners are asked to be at the club on Sunday 18 Dec at 11.45am, where sponsorship money will be collected before the start of the run, the organisers would prefer that sponsorship forms are used to raise funds, late entrants however can pay a registration fee of £5 on the day, £3 for juniors, a spokesperson for the Sarsfields Under 16’s who have organised the run remarked "We are delighted to be able to assist young Mark and St. Pat’s and also raise much needed funds for the Sarsfields Club".
