Sarsfields 3-08 Wolfe Tones 1-12
Sarsfields had morale boosting victory over close neighbours Wolfe Tones in front of a large crowd for this Sunday evening fixture. It was neck and neck in the closing stages of the first half, with both sides looking as if they were afraid to lose. However when Richie Stevenson was hauled down to prevent a goal, Paul McGeown put away the penalty to put some space between the sides. That said, it took some heroic goalkeeping from Darran McAvoy to deny the Tones two goals.
Early in the second half Paul McGeown followed in on a Thomas McAlinden shot that was edging wide and got the vital touch to beat the Tones keeper and put the Highmoss into a six point lead. A second Paul McGeown penalty kept the momentum with Sarsfields. Free kicks kept the visitors within touching distance, but points from Michael Stevenson and Thomas McAlinden meant that a late Tones penalty only served to put a gloss on the scoreline. Over fussy refereeing prevented the game from flowing in what must have been a poor enough match for the many neutrals. It was satisfaction rather than delight for the Highmoss.
