Armagh League 1st Division Crossmaglen vs Sarsfields

Friday 2nd May 2014 7:30pm Crossmaglen Pitch

Final Score: Crossmaglen 1-13 Sarsfields 1-14.

Tonight saw the first away match of Sarsfields to Crossmaglen Rangers in St Oliver Plunkett Park on a sunny Friday evening. Sarsfields shot off to an impressive 1-7 to 0-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the opening half, with an exciting goal from Sarsfields’ forward Thomas McAlinden and points from Colin Stevenson and Paul McGeown to put the High Moss men ten points ahead. Coming into the middle of the first half Crossmaglen managed to score 1-2 to halve Sarsfields’s lead and with scores from Cross’s Callum Cumisky and Padraig ‘Paudy’ Studdard the South Armagh men shortened the gap to two points. With pressure building, Sarsfields’ Paul McGeown found a second wind, scoring an additional three points and with Eimeid Murray and Thomas McAlinden furthering Sarsfields’ lead and with only returning point from Rangers’ Liam O’Neill the Hoops men ended a strong first half performance ahead with the score Crossmaglen 1-6 Sarsfields 1-12.

With the sun setting in the second half, both teams surely put on a riveting thirty minutes of play. The Rangers’ Liam O’Neill opened the game with an impressive point from play and with additional scores from Paudy Studdard and Francis ‘Franny’ Hanratty it was a nervous couple of minutes before Sarsfields’ Paul McGeown put what was to be only one of two points kicked for Sarsfields in the second half over the Cross bar. With pressure from midfielders Kevin McShane and David McKenna, Cross managed to close the gap to one point, with scores from Liam O’Neill and Michael McNamee but Sarsfields managed to stay ahead until the final whistle. Overall, a remarkable victory for the North Armagh men, but back to the drawing board as both sides will meet in the first round of the Armagh Senior Championship on the 17th of August.
