Armagh League 1st Division Sarsfields vs St Patrick’s Cullyhanna

Sunday 18th May 2014 2pm Sarsfields Pitch

Final Score: Sarsfields 2-7 Cullyhanna 0-11

Today saw Sarsfields’ fifth Armagh League meeting between the current league leaders St Patrick’s Cullyhanna on a wet and windy Sunday afternoon. Hoops forward Eimeid Murray opened the scoring with a point received from Colin Stevenson, who himself had an early goal attempt stopped by the Cullyhanna goalkeeper. With Armagh Senior stronghold Ciaran McKeever out of action for today’s game, St Patrick’s relied on Armagh senior player Robbie Tasker and Armagh Under 21 player Aidan Nugent to bring the scores level again after ten minutes. Cullyhanna controlled much of the first half with the help from Malachy Mackin, maintaining possession in midfield and with Tasker and his corner forward team mate adding an additional five points, the South Armagh men pulled ahead before Sarsfields’ Paul McGeown and Colin Stevenson replied scoring three points between them as the whistle blew with half time score Sarsfields 0-5 Cullyhanna 0-7.

The second half opened again with St Patrick’s Robbie Tasker scoring two early points from play; however a much stronger performance from the High Moss men prevented Cullyhanna from scoring again until the last five minutes of the second half. Sarsfields grew to top form with Colin Stevenson finding the back of the net and team mate Paul McGeown adding a point from a free kick to bring both sides level at 1-6 to 9 points in the middle of the second half. Captain Paul Magee and midfielder Brian Lavery kept the ball from falling deep within the home side of the pitch and Paul McGeown scored a penalty after being fouled in the box to put Sarsfields four ahead with two minutes to go. Cullyhanna managed to claim two late points back however the final whistle ended the game with the home team winning; Sarsfields 2-7 Cullyhanna 0-11.
