Sarsfields 1-12 Dromintee 1-10
Paul McGeown quickly put Highmoss on the scoreboard and had a second effort drift wide. Dromintee cancelled out the point and by the time Richie Stevenson hit a second Sarsfields point the South Armagh side could well have been three goals in front. Both sides squandered chances before a Michael Stevenson free and Eamon McGeown point from play gave the Highmoss a bit of breathing space. Dromintee dropped a couple of efforts in on top of Darran McAvoy and they were quickly cleared by the defence that seemed a bit more alert. Richie Stevenson added a point and captain Kieran McAlinden sent over a great point. Peter Stevenson collected a nice flick from brother and deserved a point after a great run but saw the chance go wide. In the final minute of the half Richie Stevenson pointed a free. An injury time Dromintee free saw them hit their first point in almost half an hour and reduce the Highmoss lead to five points.
On the restart Paul McGeown quickly sent over a point. Dromintee quickly responded and when Stefan Green send over a good score, they immediately cancelled out that score indicating they weren’t going to give up without a fight. Dromintee added three points without reply closing the gap to two points. Mark Reynolds just managed keep a ball going behind the defence in what could have been a dangerous move. Meanwhile Sarsfields attempts and fancy moves through the Dromintee defence just weren’t coming off. Dromintee were denied a goal when a powerful shot came off the crossbar. Dromintee though got their noses in front with a goal with ten minutes to go. Darran McAvoy had knocked a ball down and Micheál O’Rourke pounced soccer style. A Highmoss defender valiantly slid in but couldn’t make the goal line clearance. However the Sarsfields response showed great character. Within three minutes Michael Stevenson had hit over three points, two frees and one from play. The second free edging Sarsfields ahead was a super example of a difficult pressure kick.
The victory was sealed with a Mark Reynolds goal three minutes from time. A Michael Stevenson shot dropped short and when it seemed Dromintee might clear the danger Mark nipped in robbed the defender and snatched the vital goal. Dromintee quickly pulled back a point to give themselves a chance of salvaging a draw with a goal. They pressed forward urgently and Micheál O’ Rourke saw a last gasp goal opportunity rise over the crossbar. With that point the final whistle sounded and Sarsfields had claimed the Senior League Shield. Well done to both teams for brightening up a dreary night in terms of the weather and providing some excitement for the supporters who had come out in spite of the conditions.
